'Tis the season to be WALL-E
12:54am 25/11/2009
With the holidays coming up, there will be people that might want to give me stuff. I know that most of those people have already done so, but here are some ideas for those who haven't -- or just to satisfy the idle curiosity of those who have no intention of actually buying anything. Most of the recent additions on these lists is about me catching up with modern gaming, some are some "would be nice to have" things, and in the case of the Amazon wish list there are even things that I may have wanted years ago that just aren't around anymore. The Best Buy list has the option of contributing to a "Pitch In" gift card -- little contributions (starting at $5) can add up... right?

This is my Amazon list,
and this is my Best Buy list.

So, as Facebook readers already know, my computer is finally complete. I present to you the Jim Mk. II, codename "Nightwing."

Right this way... )

I've overclocked the processor to 3.7-3.96 GHz (up from 2.67). I've heard of people getting stable overclocks in excess of 4GHz, but I'm satisfied with things the way they are now. When I attempted to increase the overclock on my graphics card, I ran a stress test at the base level and that alone brought the temperature in excess of 100°C. I have no intention of boiling water in there, so I've abandoned that for now.

When I look back at all the great musicians of my time that were taken away from us so soon, I do feel sorrow at their passing. Kurt Cobain, Jeff Buckley, Layne Stanley, et al, could have graced our ears with so much more fantastic works had they just a little more time.

However, there's another part of me that is glad. When I hear the crap currently being churned out by the likes of Chris Cornell, Mike Doughty, and Dave Grohl, I think that it may have been a good thing that they died when their music was still good.

After six trips to two DMVs over the course of three weeks, I've finally gotten our cars all squared away. Jessi is a legal Rhode Islander, and I'm a Rhode Islander again. Now I have to get her to stop being so articulate when she says "Pawtucket" or "Woonsocket." I never want to go into another DMV for as long as I live after the harrowing experience I went through this month. They have all of these niggling little rules that aren't clearly laid out that they just spring on you after you've waited for hours to get up to the counter. Plus, if you deal with two different attendants on the same issue, they tend to each have their own contradicting versions of these rules. Then there were the problems we had getting our titles, because she has a lease and I have a lien. If we ever need to move out of state again, we may just have to leave our cars behind.

There isn't much else to talk about, since that and work have consumed much of my life lately. Lately I've been playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, since it was just $10 on Steam and people kept telling me that I should play it. Unfortunately, with the hours I've been getting at work I can only afford old games. I still get scheduled just enough to interfere with evening jujitsu classes, and I can never get enough sleep to wake up in time for morning classes. I haven't gotten any more work done on my new computer, either. The search for a new (or second) job is ongoing.

Today Jessi and I drove down to the real Rhode Island once again to attend The Newport Waterfront Irish Festival. It was much the same as the last time we went about three years ago, but we did spend more time taking in the music this year. The two bands that we watched the most of were actually both Canadian: The Town Pants out of Vancouver, and The Glengarry Bhoys of Toronto. We also wandered around looking at the various wares for sale. There were two t-shirts right next to of each other that caught my eye... one said "Warning: Irish temper and German stubbornness," and the other started out the same and ended with "and Italian attitude." It's like they were expecting the two of us! I also got to pet a few Irish wolfhounds (yep, they be tall). As the festivities were winding down, we wandered to a place called Salas' Restaurant, and managed to get some pretty good food without paying through the nose. We did have to deal with people near our table getting smelly seafood... one of the pitfalls of visiting an island.

We finally got the VIN checks done for our cars on Friday. However, there was a problem when we went to the police station. I have a lien on my car through Chase, and I e-mailed them for a copy of the title so I'd be able to transfer my registration. However, they only sent me a computer printout listing the title number and with their name as lien holder. When I handed that to the guys at the police station the had never seen anything like that before. Luckily they accepted a copy of my registration instead... but I still can't go to the DMV until I get a copy of a REAL title. I bought the car eight months ago, so they should have it by now. It's a good thing that we can do our license transfers at the RI Mall branch, since the real DMV offices close before Jessi gets out of work. Once we get those done I can do her registration for her on one of my many days off.

Chris Cornell says, "When you find your way, then you see it disappear, it's all right." Sure, that's easy for him to say, but it's not quite so easy when you find yourself in that very situation. I've wasted the past five years of my life, in addition to thousands of dollars, solely to find out that I absolutely do not want to be a high school teacher. My mother keeps saying that I need to have my own classroom and try teaching for a year before I say that, but I am not so slow-witted as to need that long to make a decision. Unfortunately, it seems that teaching is the only viable career option I have at the moment. No other paths are open to me. I certainly can't keep working in retail, especially since payroll hours have been stretched thin over the past few weeks, and it seems that it'll get worse before it gets better. I'm also giving consideration to getting work as a voice-over actor, but at the most I can only plan on that being something that I'd be doing on the side.

Anyway, I got my new computer case safe and sound, and I've put everything I've gotten so far in there. With fortuitous timing, Nvidia has announced that they're giving away Batman: Arkham Asylum when you purchase a GTX series sound card. They say "while supplies last," but it's a digital download. Other than that, the offer expires December 31, so hopefully I'll be able to get the money together before then. This has definitely helped me in making a decision between purchasing a Radeon card or a GeForce.

It goes like this:

Notice how it sort of spirals at the end.

Whew, I really need to update more often and stop playing catch-up like this. We've finally gotten everything moved here, with the exception of some of Jessi's old books that are sitting in her grandmother's shed. The essentials are all unpacked, but everything that we have in the cellar is all piled on pallets on top of one another, and we're waiting for my brother to move the rest of his stuff out of there so we can have some room to sort through everything. He'll be renting a truck on Friday.

I have all the stuff that I ordered from Intel -- the processor, motherboard, and Windows Vista (the voucher for Windows 7 will be coming later). Plus, I got a fancy light-up case fan, and I bought a light-up "spot cool" fan because I read somewhere that the northbridge fan was pretty loud. Unfortunately, it turns out that my hard drives and optical drives are NOT compatible with the motherboard, so I'm going to have to buy converters for them. I'll be cutting down to one optical drive (DVD+R) and one hard drive because of that. However, yesterday my father asked how I'd feel if he bought me a new case so that he could take my old one to have as a spare. Who am I to argue with that? I asked him to buy me this one, an Apevia X-cruiser. Once that arrives, I can start assembly and just keep adding to it little by little as I get new pieces.

I tell you, moving SUCKS. We rented a truck and hired movers, but we couldn't fit everything and had to go back with both of our cars and my parents' truck... and we STILL couldn't fit everything. Now we have to go back on Tuesday. To top it all off, my new job is completely wearing me out. I miss the Hadley store. At least we have our comfy bed set up now... the beds in my parents' guest room are practically torture devices.

My new motherboard & stuff are due to arrive tomorrow, so there is a bright spot in there. There's also a chance that we'll be getting our last month's rent back on top of our security deposit, because somebody is looking to move into our old condo by August 1st. Even if that doesn't work out, we could still get half of it back if somebody moves in later in the month.

Today I got an email from Intel telling me that my employment verification was complete! Now my order has been placed, and all I need to do is wait. Naturally, they're experiencing unexpected demand, so it could be as long as two months before I actually get it. Since I'm sure it'll take me much longer than that to gather the other components, that's no big deal. The good news is that I don't need a new case, just a new power supply. Intel has also done a good job of touting the onboard sound subsystem: high-def 7.1 surround sound with Dolby applications. It's enough to have me questioning whether or not I'll need a separate sound card. The board even encourages overclocking with special heat sinks and support software. It also supports dual video cards... from different manufacturers, if you so choose. Craziness, I tell you.

I'm hoping to get out to W. MA this week to spend time with my bebe, see Harry Potter, and move more stuff. I'll probably have to make more than one trip so that I don't keep the pickup truck away from my dad and brother for too long. My brother has gotten most of the big furniture that he'll be taking, but there are still several things that are left over. And there's also the issue of the things that he won't be taking, and since we won't have enough room for all of our stuff as it is, my parents will have to move things into the cellar or sell them on Craigslist. We need to clear everything out soon, because Jessi is teaching a course in Attleboro to help middle school kids transition into high school, and that starts at the end of the month. Our landlord also promised to refund some of our rent if we move out early and another tenant moves in before the end of August. She also wants to do some painting and such... and we'd like to have our stuff out of there when she does that.

I haven't done any more moving in, but I have shifted around a little bit. I've set myself up on an actual computer desk... but not the one that I left with! My brother decided to take a different desk and left the other one set up, then after he actually took his computer, I moved right over. I've also set up my trendy tube TV and finally started playing Majora's Mask, which I had downloaded on my Wii back in May. Unfortunately I was wrapped up in playing Morrowind at the time, because my computer can only play old games.

My computer! Oh, it's had such a long life, and it's still going strong! However, I'm hoping that I'll be able to start building a new one soon. Everything is horrendously out of date, and the only way for me to upgrade is to start completely from scratch. I can keep my hard drives -- I have a 60GB internal and an 80GB external, and I still have plenty of room on both. No need to get a 2TB drive quite yet. Luckily, I work at Best Buy... and that makes it easy to build a good computer cheap. Right now my biggest hope is to get in on Intel's "Big Deal" for retail employees -- a $700-$800 motherboard and processor set for only $300. I just faxed them an employment verification form -- now I just have to pray that they process and approve it before the offer ends on 7/22. Then I'll have to either get a new power supply or a new PC case, a video card, and a sound card. I'd also like to get an LCD TV to use as a monitor and to hook my video game consoles into, thereby eliminating the two CRT behemoths that dominate my multimedia life.

By special request, I bring you an encore presentation of...

Today's Interesting Vanity License Plate: (from NY) YWEWORK. This was on a bright yellow Corvette, but the origin of the plate confused Jessi. I had to explain that the Corvette is the reason why they work.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I'll also need some RAM. That's pretty important, especially since that motherboard is DDR3 and I only have DDR. Also, the bundle includes Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, with a voucher to upgrade to Windows 7 upon release. I hope that voucher has a generous expiration date, because I know better than to try to use any Microsoft product too soon after its release date.

Naturally, the move didn't go quite as planned. My brother's closing was delayed, which delayed him moving out of the apartment. We were told that he did move a few things out... but there's still quite a bit left. Right now I've squeezed my computer into the corner next to his desk, and I have the monitor on a TV tray. It's a good thing that I had only intended to bring a little bit of stuff. I just won't be able to set any of it up until some more stuff gets taken out of here. Jessi and I both loaded up our respective cars and drove to RI yesterday, then today we went back with my dad's truck to take my computer desk and chair, along with various boxes of stuff that's just going in the cellar... and the things that I forgot to bring yesterday. Lucky for me I had a second chance.

Anyway, after we had unloaded the truck and I was getting ready to park it in its little tent, my brother drove up! What timing! He loaded up Jake's bedroom set and some small things with some help from the rest of us, then my father and I drove with him to unload it. Yes, that's right... I did two rounds of moving in one day. We'll see how I feel in the morning.

Oh, yes... after getting the runaround for weeks, I'm officially set to start my new job on Monday afternoon. The only other day I'm confirmed for is Wednesday, but there's a possibility of getting another one or two days out of their training budget. Since the schedule for this week had already been made by the time they got around to figuring out what I'd be doing, they're having to squeeze me in wherever they can. Hopefully this will be straightened out by next week, because I can't work just 8-12 hours per week.

I've decided to try out something new -- posting random things that I find online. It's called:
